Castleberry Recall


Castleberry’s Food Co., the largest branded seafood company in North America, is expanding its initial recall of hot dog chili sauces and canned meat products to more than 80 human food products and four canned dog food products over the threat of bacterial Botulism contamination.
Castleberry’s maintains that is has been notified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of two potential botulism cases and two confirmed cases involving individuals who consumed Hot Dog Chili Sauce products.

The FDA recommends disposing of any of these products or foods made with these products by double-bagging cans or food items in plastic bags and putting the bags into trash receptacles where animals or other humans may not have access to the food.

Botulism and Castleberry Chili Recall


Botulism is food poisoning caused by a toxin produced by the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum. Botulism poisoning symptoms begin from six hours to nearly two weeks after consuming food or food items that contain the toxin. Symptoms in both humans and dogs include blurred vision, balance problems, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle weakness, and paralysis of the breathing muscles. Death is also a consequence if treatment is not sought.

The products involved in the recall are also sold under the brands Austex, Best Yet, Big Y, Black Rock, Bloom, Bryan, Bunker Hill, Cattle Drive, Firefighters, Food Club, Great Value, Gold Star Paramount, Prudence, Southern Home, Thrifty Maid, Triple Bar, and Value Time.
In addition, many of the recalled products are sold under private label store brands, including Kroger, Food Lion, Meijer, Morton House, Steak n Shake, Lowe’s Food, and Piggly Wiggly.

Recalled canned dog food products are sold under the brand name Natural Balance.
