AMO Contact Lens Solution Linked with Acanthamoeba Keratitis

Spokespersons for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate 138 confirmed cases of the rare eye infection, Acanthamoeba Keratitis.

Thus far, investigators from the CDC and FDA have reviewed 46 of the 138 confirmed cases. Of the 46 patients, it was determined that 21 used specific brand of multipurpose contact lens solution manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc (AMO). Representing an approximate 46% of the sample, it was determined that a strong enough association existed between the use of the AMO multipurpose solution and Acanthamoeba Keratitis to warrant the May 25, 2007 alert.

In response to the FDA and CDC alert, AMO issued a voluntary recall of their Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution to prevent any additional spread of Acanthamoeba Keratitis linked with their product.

Who is at Risk of Developing Acanthamoeba Keratitis?

Development of the serious condition has been linked with the use of AMO’s contact lens solution, AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution. Improper use of contact lenses is believed to increase the risk of infection; however, wearers who practice proper lens care may still develop the infection. What’s more, people who do not wear contact lenses may also develop the serious eye infection.

Data suggests that approximately 85% of all cases of Acanthamoeba Keratitis in the U.S. affected contact lens users. Acanthamoeba Keratitis symptoms may include sensitivity to light (photophobia), tearing, eye pain, eye redness, blurred vision, and a foreign body sensation. Early diagnosis of the condition is essential to providing sufferers with treatment. Victims may be prescribed one of several eye medications, though the damage incurred may be permanent depending on the severity of the case and its progression.

What Should you Do to Protect Yourself?

The CDC are advising contact lens wearers with the affected product to discard any remaining solution and throw out their current contact lens cases and corresponding lens storage case; all of which may contain the infecting amoeba.

Failure to adhere to CDC and FDA recommendation puts AMO multipurpose contact lens solution users at risk of developing the serious eye condition. Acanthamoeba Keratitis can lead to permanent vision problems and blindness.
